Letter to the Rugby League World Cup 2017 Tongan Team

Dear Tonga Rugby League World Cup 2017 Team,

Well done on getting to the semi-finals this year. Your team did incredibly well throughout the whole tournament. Next year I bet you'll make it to the finals (with no biased ref in the way). Even though you didn't win, you won in my eyes. Some people may be sad but you should be proud. You did really really great! God was with you through the games. You prayed before and after and you got so far with God. You did so well the king came! That must of been really cool.

Can't wait till the next Rugby League World Cup!

Perspectives and Opinions

WALT: I am able to identify the  ideas opinions of author and share my own in comparison.

Tonga and England had a match on Saturday last week. The match was for semi finals for the 2017 rugby league world cup. At Mt Smart a crowd of 30,000 people cheered on the two teams. The last try was a bit of an upset. One of the refs were a bit biased

Tooth Decay

WALT: I am able to distinguish between fact and opinion by identifying relevant language features the author has subtly used.

The end slide tells us to create a movie. We are in process of editing that movie so it will come in a separate post. I'd never heard of tooth decay until this week. It's a very serious matter that really needs to be deal with properly. 

Guy Fawkes

WALT: connecting and comparing. I relate information and ideas from texts to my own experience to form an opinion.



I didn't find out until last week that Guy Fawkes was actually a person. Personally I don't like the idea of mostly everyone celebrating a terrible event.  Guy Fawkes was not a very good person so I don't understand why the holiday is named after him.

Koko The Ape

The last few weeks in reading we have been learning about a ape called Koko. Koko has mastered sign language or at least that's what some people think. I really want to go to Koko one day to see ape sign language.

Perspectives and Opinions

WALT: Justifying - I can discuss and justify my responses across a small range of texts (thoughts, feelings, ideas and understandings).

This week is Niue Language Week. Did you know that New Zealand have more Niueans living here than in Niue? I didn't until this week. Our teacher gave us this task to learn more about Niue. I have succeeded. Now I really want to go to Niue!

This post was supposed to be finish the week this legend died. But I guess I was a tiny bit late... or maybe a lot later then expected. I found out a lot of things about Sir Colin Meads. He was a great hero and I'm very sad about his death. 

Pt England School at AIMS

WALT: Reflecting - on writer and audience appeal in news articles and campaigning (advertising).

Yes, the Pt England seven's boys won the rugby seven AIMS tournament. WE'RE THE CHAMPIONS. Some people weren't as happy. All the locals were disappointed. But at least the Tauranga Indeterminate came second.

The Space Race

WALT:  Justify by selecting the evidence across a range of texts to demonstrate what I understand of the 'Space Race' and it's purpose.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:  I will identify in my letter to opposition team their accomplishment by way of what I understand from text set.

Last week in reading we learnt about the space race. It was a race between the Soviet Union and United States of America. First they were trying to get the first satellite into space. Second they were trying to get the first man into space. Lastly they were trying to get the first man on the moon. So in the end I think that the Soviet Union won the race.

Sweet as poetry

WALT: Oral language - Analyse and adapt spoken texts with expression and confidence.

SUCCESS CRITERIA: Acknowledgements when reading lines of a play or poem, punctuation- pauses, taking a breath, volume (expression and moods)

This week our focus in reading is poetry. We read four poems and answered some questions. They were all very interesting but I found that the 'embarrassment expert' was my favourite. I can relate to it. Embarrassment is occurring in my life. I get embarrassed so much. That poem is my favourite because I can relate to it.

Plays and poetry

SUCCESS CRITERIA: acknowledgements when reading lines of a play or poem, punctuation- pauses, taking a breath, volume (expression and moods).

Today we learnt about plays and poetry. We read a play and our reading group tried to perform it. It didn't go so well. Then we listen to Joshua losefa and Arizona leger. We answered some questions then we posted it on our blog.

Biogas

WALT: Evaluating - I gather, and synthesise to evaluate information across a range of texts
SUCCESS CRITERIA: I can clearly outline what the texts have in common and how they differ.Summarise functional technology in texts.



This week we learnt about Biogas in New Zealand and India. Our first text was about Biogas in India it's made. The second text is about New Zealand landfills and how Biogas can be made from rubbish. My favourite thing that I learnt is that Biogas can be made in very different ways. From a concrete sort of machinery to a rubbish landfill. 

Making Clever Clothes & Keeping Houses Warm and Cool

WALT: Evaluating - I gather, and synthesise to evaluate information across a range of texts.

This week we had two main texts. They were about making clever clothes and keep houses warm and cool. One thing I found interesting, was the job of the man that made the clever clothing. He was a technologist. I really wanted to research more about that. I did just that. What I found out was that a technologists job is to help with development, design of application of engineering and technology.

WALT: Make a diagram based on what your learning.

Here is a diagram on heat transfer process. I focused on huskies. Obliviously they live in the snow so they would have transferred. One interesting thing that I learnt is that huskies has air pockets in between their two layers of fur. 

Staying Warm, Keeping Cool

WALT: Evaluating - I gather, and synthesise to evaluate information across a range of texts.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:  I can clearly outline what the texts have in common and how they differ.

This week in reading we learnt about our bodies and how stay warm and keep cool. One main information I learnt is that blood keeps us cool and warm. Not cool as in you have the style but as in not hot. When we feel hot, our brain cells send signals to the blood to rise to the surface of our skin. It's amazing!

Water Worries

WALT:  Support all my answers with evidence from the text.

This week we learnt about water worries. One thing that I learnt is that one of the dirtiest rivers is the Citarum River in West Java, Indonesia. Some problems that polluted the river was sewage, factory waste and litter. My poster is a short but meaningful message, "Water, don't take it for granted".

Three Kete Poster

WALA (we are learning about): How some story can just be...

one story that has many versions but all have the main message.

This week, we learnt about the three kete and what they mean.  We had a story we read about the three kete.  Also we had a presentation with questions we answered with the information from the piece of writing.  Our task was to create a poster that uses the kete as a way to encourage students with the idea of Gathering and Storing.

Rust task

What 3 ingredients are needed for rust to occur.

Metal

Oxygen from the air (O)

Water (H2O)

Write a brief paragraph explaining the rusting process (why rusting occurs)

When metal is near water and oxygen, it forms rust. Rusting occurs when H2O (water) and O (oxygen) is in contact with iron or steel. The rusting process becomes faster when salty water or acid rain is applied.

                                                                                                        

How could you prevent something from rusting?

By preventing metal from rusting you can paint it or put a layer of oil or grease over the metal. It is a good idea to use this as a solution so that the oxygen could bounce off the metal instead of rusting it, depending on what kind of environment  the metal is in.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.

We learnt that the term corrosion is used to describe metal breaking down when it is exposed to the environment. We also learnt that rusting can be prevented when you either paint, grease/oil or a process called galvanizing. An example of galvanizing is when you put zinc and iron together, the zinc protects the iron but it sacrifices itself because zinc reacts more than the iron.

This week in reading, we read a article about twins hand holding while crossing the finish line for the marathon in the Rio Olympics 2016. The twins crossed the finish line and some people were crossed with them. They gave bad comments and some people tried to defend them. We were also given another article to read which was about Abby D'Agostino and NIkki Hamblin. Our task was to make a venn diagram comparing and contrasting the two articles (which is on slide 5).
