Word Problems Week 6 & 7

WALT: Understand which 2 operations (+, -, x, /) can be used to solve each problem.

This week in maths we were learning about word problems and how to solve them with two different operations. I tried to use two operations but I wrote it down in a book.

Speech Competition

You may have seen my speech from a few weeks ago. Well everybody in Year 7 & 8 (at our school) made a speech as well. Three of the best speeches from each literacy classes were chosen and had a little speech off. The three from our classroom were... Yvonne, Seini and Atareita. I think they were awesome. You can read about it here. In every speech, I could feel that everyone was nervous. Sitting there I thought of some things I could include in my speech.
Fifteen speeches were given in front of all year 7 & 8's. My favourite speech had to be the first. Her speech was about a sad personal story.  I nearly cried.

Those speeches have been marked. Now we're waiting for the top five speeches to be announced. Can't wait to see who was the best!

Geometry Cube Rockets

Today we started our maths lesson for the week. We are learning about Geometry. We've got a task that comes along with it. In our maths book we designed our cube rockets. Our task was to try to figure out in our minds, what it would look like from the top, side and front. We partnered up with a person. Tomorrow our partners are going to try and build the rocket. Their gonna try to build it with only the drawing (in our math books) of the top, side and front.  Can't wait for tomorrow.

All this data is going to be recorded onto a presentation. It will be posted by the end of the week.

Home Learning Week 6

Home Learning: Maths Focus.

Last week I forgot to complete the home learning. So here it is now. I think I still need to keep up my math whizz usage. This week's is much better than last.

Data Usage

WALT: Collect and organise data.

This week in maths we learnt about data usage. I especially learnt about probability. A refresh came back to me about the Mean, Median, Mode and Range. The Mean is all the numbers added then divided by how many numbers there are. The Median is the middle number when the numbers are put in numerical order. The mode is the most occurred number. The Range is the difference between the lowest and highest number.

Extension trip to Hidden Figures

WALT: Write a review or reflection about school trips right after they have happened.

On the 8th of March the year 7 & 8 Extension group went to see Hidden Figures. We went because one of our teacher's sister, paid for our trip (Mr Vogt is the teacher). That week I learnt that back then in the 60's mathematician were called computers. I also learnt when the first computer had help from Dorothy Vaughan. It was called IBM. The extension group is very thankful for that great day so thank you to Mr Vogt's sister. Here's a brief explanation of the movie. It's about three incredible women who work for NASA. They all helped astronauts go to space.

Place Value

WALT: -Demonstrate use of new knowledge about place value.
          -Add and subtract decimals to 3 decimal places.

This week in maths, we learnt about place value and adding and subtracting decimals. One thing that I enjoyed was 'the number conundrum'. I did a practise round before the one that you saw. With that, I didn't go so well. I found it a bit challenging at  first but the second one, I was spot on!

Thinkboard - Week 6

WALT: Add and subtract decimals.

This week we were given this think-board. The whole think-board is based around subtracting decimals. What I learnt is that when using partitioning for subtracting decimals, never spilt up the first number. I learnt never spilt up the first number but spilt up the second. For example: 2.534 - 1.112=?
2.534 - 1= 1.543
1.543 - 0.1=1.443
1.443 - 0.01=1.433
1.433 - 0.002=1.431
So the answer would be 1.431. Please comment to see what I did with the subtracting and partition.

Adventurous Adverb

WALA(we  are learning about): Adverbs and how to use them effectively.

In class with Ms Tito, we have been learning how to make different sentences saying how, where and when. Our teacher said that we get something if we do one in Maori. Once I heard that, I  thought I can just do three of them Maori. If you have the time, you can guess what the three Maori words are. The pictures are clues so it will probably be easy.

Problem Solving-Week 6

WALT: Multiply and divide decimal numbers.

In maths Problem Solving this week, I learnt that it is very very important to look at the last number before answering. I had to do a whole lot of decimals question and the way that I worked it out was by looking at the number on the right. For example: 1893-546=?, before I answer I am going to look at the last two numbers. So 13-16=7, after that we solve the rest of the question. The end result would be 1347. So all I'm saying is to always look at the number on the right.

Team Four's Trade Fair

WALT: Use language that paints a picture in the mind of our reader.

This Terms topic is Trade and Enterprise and in team four we have our own business’, money and online banking accounts. Some of us have a job, which we had to write an application for. Because of all of this, we (team four) had our very own trade fair to advertise and sell our own products, I will tell you about this later in my writing.

Our topic Trade and Enterprise, focuses on the two important words. I thought about the words Trade and Enterprise and what they mean during the trade fair. In the Trade Fair, we had to take orders from  our customers, make orders for our product, gain interest from our customers, explain what the product was and say what they would have to trade for the product.

In our six business’ which are Toys, Kitchen, Custom Stationery, Jewellery, Musical Instruments and Homeware we had to prepare for the Trade Fair. I am in Toys, we had to take orders unlike the business Kitchen. We prepared in week one, two and three by making order forms, making example products and getting the price sorted. My product is squishy balls which sold very successfully at the Trade Fair.

At the Trade Fair we had turns with our work buddy, one of us had to go trading well the other had to stay at the stall. Our turns lasted for half of the whole time. I was the first to go trading with my earned 10 PT and I bought a lot of stuff, but I forgot to buy three things. They were an orange candle, mini loom band headphones and some food. At the our stall, my partner was supposed to be making orders but she gave two squishy balls from hand.

From all of this, I have learnt to always make more orders than we had in the Trade Fair or make it online. I cannot wait till week eight when we have our market. At the market we will give the orders to people and trading our products and giving by hand like my partner.  If you want to know what PT and Pieces are, click on the words.

In writing this week, we had a really good writing session. Each paragraph we had to write and in between them, we all came to the mat and our teacher talked to us. It was a really good season and I hope to do it next time.

Vocabulary

WALT: Learn and use new Vocabulary.

This week, our teacher gave us a little test and this was included. We learnt about new Vocabulary like employer and salary. Even our teacher learnt something new about Salary and Wages. I hope to learn more about things like this in the future.

Math Teacher lesson-Week 6

WALT: Solve multiplication problems using a range of strategies.

This week in maths, we have been learning about solving problems with ranges of strategies. We did this video on the learning group table and before we did this video we worked out other questions that every one was joining in to answer the question. If you have any questions or you enjoyed this, comment to tell me.

Problem Solving-Week 6

WALT: Solve multiplication problems using a range of strategies.

Task: Make a copy of the presentation (look to the right) Complete the presentation with a friend or friends. Remember to add in all of your working so that others my understand your solution. Once you have finished, post this on your blog. One bit of the task that was not mentioned was the part when we had to work together. This was a task that we set for our group. What happened was one of us had one idea and another of us had a another idea, we talked about them and came up with a answer that everyone agreed too. We worked it out in the end!

This week in Maths, we have been learning about working together to get to the answer. My group (Rosalina and Revival) worked together to finish the presentation. I hope you enjoyed our presentation and our little story of working together.

Newspaper Tower

Walt: Write a recount with a hook and orientation

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Introduction
Do you think our teacher has been drinking too much coffee? Two weeks ago he fed us chicken flavoured worms, now he’s telling us to create a tower of newspaper! What has happen with my teacher? Read on to see how this newspaper tower building results came out.
How this started
When we sat on the mat, it seem like the carpet had more space. Our teacher started to talk about recounts and giving out materials like five and a half pieces newspaper, masking tape, scissors and eight minutes to create a tower. The next thing you know is that we were in groups of four or five. Alisha, Heather and me were in a group then Adriel, Yvonne and Cameo joined our group! It was all fine.
Let’s Get Started!
Once everyone was in their groups, we got our martials and started our eight minutes. Our team name was called Team Talita and I was guessing that this meant I was the team leader. It took a while to think of what we were going to do, but in the end it went well. The tower looked like a skinny tower with a fat base at the bottom.
Results
Our eight minutes had stopped and our teacher called out, “eight minutes is over”. We had finish our tower building challenge and I thought we did well until our teacher said,”bring your towers to the front”. Team Talita were already in the front so we left ours where it was. There was four teams and two other towers did not make it to the end but ours was still standing. Our teacher got his foot and measured our tower and the other teams tower, it was a tie so Rosalina, got the meter ruler and our teacher measured the towers with it.
Conclusion
I think that our teacher should stop getting crazy and start being a normal teacher because…   we want our teacher back! Now that I know that we have won, I think we did well. I hope that our teacher gets back because it seems like we have another teacher.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the last few weeks we have been learning about hooking an audience with our writing. We have also been marking each others writing. My partner was Rima. I hopes you enjoyed!

Auckland Art Gallery Trip

Year 5 trip to Auckland Art Gallery
Famous art work, year 5’s, Lego?  Did you guess what I'm writing about. Well you probably did because it has a  title. It all started on Friday the twenty first of November…  If you want to find out more you should read Friday day, which is this whole text.

Session One
Our first session was a gallery tour, which was my second favourite session. The gallery tour is when we went to two different rooms with our tour guide, Linda. We first went into the room with painting from the Victorian Era. When we went inside she asked us if we knew what the story was from the painting was about. None of us got the story, so then she told us. In the second room we did the same thing that we did in the first room expect we made it up. Linda taught us how to make different sorts of sounds. After we had finished session one we had our morning tea.

Session Two

All of a sudden Many, (one of the people who work there) came and showed us to a Studio, which looked like a class to me. When she showed us the room, she said,”when you get inside sit on a chair and start cutting the jar out”. So we cut the jar out. After we had finished cutting the jar out, we had to draw a story that happen in our lives by drawing. We had to use no words in our picture. None of us finished so our teacher took our jars to school and do it there. As soon as Mandy said line up we all sprinted to be the first one there. Just so you know, I was not the first one there. Once we had that session over, it was lunch time.

Session Three
Finally, the session that I have been waiting for. Free choice session…  but, the parents free choice. Parents had to pick out the learning area or center, Lego building and top floor. Our group went to the learning center and we had a lot of fun there. The thing that I thought we wouldn't do but did was…  top floor!
On the top floor we went with more people that were not in our group and there was a light show that we went to. When we went inside it was dark and we were all scared except for…  my Dad. We all were holding him tightly especially the boys, until…  we saw stars and walk to them but fell right onto the bean bag. After we had finished that chaos, we held onto my Dad and walked to the next room. We had to walk through a corridor that was dark, but we made to the next room. We danced in front of the video and realized that somebody was watching, so we ran out of the room because we were embarrass. With our extended group, we took off outside to a little playground. Once we had got tired, we thought we could go back. On our way back, we saw another class. When we came back from the top floor another group left to go there well we had our Lego building rotation.

Conclusion
I would there again but no in the bus with lots of noise. If you want to go there and try to prove me wrong, go ahead. Leave a comment if I did anything wrong…  which I probably didn't.
