Go Hard with College

Today Mr Andrew Patterson came into our school with a student and an inspirational talk. Two students talked about their experiences with college and also shared some inspirational quotes. A student from Manurewa high school spoke about his experiences (it was a video of his speech given a week). He gave a quote. Which was 'change won't happen if you don't do something yourself'. That was probably my favourite quote from all the quotes that were given. From that I am now going to be the best college student I can be.

Mr Patterson brought with him an ex Pt England student who has moved onto Tamaki College. His name is Raenan. Raenan was asked questions from Mr Patterson. One of the questions were "how did you feel when you walked into Tamaki College for the first time as a year nine student on the first day?". He answered, "I felt nervous but once I saw my mates I felt like I belonged". He went on about how different college is to Pt England and how you need to manage time much better. That scared me a bit because I'm terrible with time. But then he said just go hard. Then I thought I can do it. Now I'm gonna go to college with the thought of 'GO HARD!'.

Pt England School at AIMS

WALT: Reflecting - on writer and audience appeal in news articles and campaigning (advertising).

Yes, the Pt England seven's boys won the rugby seven AIMS tournament. WE'RE THE CHAMPIONS. Some people weren't as happy. All the locals were disappointed. But at least the Tauranga Indeterminate came second. 

The making of our class' Manaiakalani film festival movie

WALT: Write about our experience of movie making for Manaiakalani Film Festival.

Manaiakalani is the trust which allows 13 schools to learn with chrome books. Every year the Manaiakalani trust has a film festival. All 13 schools go to the movie theater throughout the week of the film festival. All the film festival movies, are made from classrooms over 13 schools. My class' movie has three parts.

I think the part of the movie I'm in is very funny. The biggest challenge of filming had to be keeping in character. Everyone couldn't stop laughing. Everything was just so hilarious. It took one whole hour to film the our little part. My highlight was laughing. Laughing was my highlight and low light. I can't wait to see it on the big screen at the film festival.

Next year, I'm going to high school. That means this is the last time I'll experience the making of the Manaiakalani film festival. Can't wait to go to the movie theater to see our amazing but funny movie.

Multiplication Pyramid

WALT: Practise our multiplication.

This week in maths we had a pyramid to multiply. So how it works is the you multiply the first row. For example, 9 x 2 on the right hand bottom corner. That would equal to 18. 

Sentence Types

WALT: Use different types of sentences in our writing.



This week in writing, we are learning to write an explanation. As well as that we learnt to write different sentences. The ones we learnt are... simple sentences, compound sentences and complex sentences. Once we write, I can't wait to write these sort of sentences.

Multiplication Pyramid

This week we had a follow up activity. We had to multiply the bottom row then work our way up. I found this very fun. My friends and I had fun trying to work it out the fastest. The top number took a while to found out. 

Solving Fraction Problems

WALT: Order fractions with different denominators.

This week in maths, we learnt about fractions. We learnt how to find out which fraction is larger with different denominators. When I first started I had a bit of trouble finding the right way to solve the questions. Once I had a bit of help, I got the answers straight away. This is our strategy... 

Which fraction is bigger, 6/8 or 3/5. First we multiply the denominators to get the whole number(denominator). Like this:

5 x 8=40

Next we divide the 40 by the denominators by the original denominators. Like this:

40 / 5=8

40 / 8=5

Finally we multiply these numbers by the original numerators. Like this:

8 x 3=24

5 x 6=30

So in the end it should look like this.

30/40 > 24/40.  

If I were Prime Minister...

WALT: Update our self's in current events.

On Monday, John Key resigned from New Zealand Prime Minister. He felt it was time to go. He spent 10 years in parliament and 8 years as the leader of the National Party. He said, “a good leader knows when to step down”. The responsibilities of a Prime minister, is to… go to all the parliament meetings, run the country, making laws for the country, taking care of our big problems and loads more. We thank him for his efforts, but the TPPA I just don’t like. TPPA stands for Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

Even though I twelve, I still have a thought about money and what it means to the world. To me, money is nothing; to other people, money is everything. I would say education is much more important than money. There are probably people in New Zealand who are smart enough to have a career but don’t because of money. Yes there are scholarships, but some still require money. Money that people can’t pay because their jobs don’t pay. If I ever become Prime Minister.

If I were Prime Minister, I would care more about the rivers, homeless and work on what people are getting compared to what other people are getting. I don’t think I would do the right math to figure out comparing of job payments. Since I’m only twelve, I don’t think I’ll do well on getting all the knowledge in my head.

The task for this week was to write about being prime minster. We wrote about problems we would change, laws we don't like and things like that. My main problem is in the second paragraph. I thought about because I wrote this at school. Some problems New Zealand face are hard but the views and landscape are amazing.

Thinkboard - Week 9

WALT: Add decimals.

This week our think-board was based around adding decimals. I used the strategy of partitioning. Underneath this text is one example of this strategy being use. 

As you can see, I keep the first number the same and spilt the second number. I find this much more easy for subtracting and adding decimals.

Fact or Opinion

WALT: I can scan text to find information that express an opinion or fact.

This week in reading, we did a little activity about the flag foredoom. We read statements and marked them if we thought they were fact opinion. Together as a class, we marked if we were right or wrong. I think I had got one wrong but changed it just as our teacher said we are going to mark now. That was the only thing wrong but I counted as right in case somebody does not read this bit and says, that was right she marked it wrong. It was a fun activity. If your thinking that i did this myself, I didn't and Seini was the person I did this with.

I sorry I could not finish the movie but it will be posted soon. This story had some sad bits to it, but it was good in the end. One of the things that being kind just before you died is a great to do. Anytime of kindness would be great actually. If you want to read the story click link.

Time in extension

WALT: Write a story about your time in extension this year.

It has been the second year of extension for me and I have learnt lots. There was also a lot of places we visited or they visited us. I have had a great time in extension and I hope that next year I can a great time to.

My highlight from this year was probably the forty hour famine sleepover. It was really fun and it was cool to spend time with my friends at night and sort of the evening. One of the things that was sad about the sleepover is that my sister could not come because she did something to her foot and she did the famine at home instead.

Some things in the year I did to get to attend because I was at sports. I hope to get to see something similar to that in the future. One thing that I missed recently is the Bee presentation and it looked really cool. It could've been my highlight but it wasn’t.

Next year I hope to be in extension and opportunities like this next year. I will take them and enjoy them. At prize-giving on Thursday I was awarded third place for academic in year six so I think I might just might get to extension next year. My rating for this year is a eight out of ten. I really enjoyed it!

I have had a great time thinking about all the things this year in extension. I also had a great time writing and having those experience. I would loved to be in extension next year.

Problem Solving-Week 9

WALT: Know North, South,West and East really well.

In maths this week, we learnt about the four different ways. They are, North, South, West and East. We learnt which way is opposite each other and other things like that. I learnt that North is opposite South and West is opposite East. When answering question like in the presentation, you would have to know which way is opposite each other.

Onomatopoeia

WALT: Use onomatopoeia to help create interest in our writing.

This week in writing, we learnt about onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia is a word that mimics the sound of the object or action it refers to. When you pronounce a word, it will mimic its sound. For example; "splat" went the drink onto the ground, there goes the alarm again "buzz". Click here for more examples of words.

Using Similes With Ms Tito

In Reading this week with Ms Tito, we have been learning about similes. I have learnt that you have to use either as or like in a simile. For example; Yvonne is as pretty as me. We compare one thing to the other with a as or like in the middle of it.

Maths Teacher Lesson-Week 9

WALT: Add and subtract fractions.

In the last few weeks in maths, we have been learning how to add and subtract fractions. I have learnt when adding fractions you do not add the denominator, only the numerator. For example; 3/18 + 6/18 + 4/18 = 13/18. I know the answer because you do not add the denominator. All I did was, 3+6+4=13. Once I did that, I put the 18 with it. I thought if I could make it simpler fraction, but I could not because it is an even and odd fraction. So the answer is 13/18.

In Problem Solving this week, I learnt that you do not need to have to have writing to solve a question you can use drawing. Me and my partner Rima used squares and writing, so double! I hope I will learn even more next week! I think I will.
