WALT: Create a animated diagram of the water cycle.

My water is three terms late but I got there in the end. The water cycle helps our water not run out. It's so fascinating!

Probability Reflection

WALT: Calculate the probability of an event happening.

Task: Write a reflection about this weeks maths. 

This week we learnt about probability. I have learnt that probability is actually helpful. It could be helpful when trying to figure out the Weather. Almost everyday you use probability to plan around the weather. Meteorologists don't know what the weather will be. Because of that they use tools and instruments to find out the chance that it will rain, snow or hail. Example; if there's a 70-percent chance of hail, then conditions of the weather are such that 70 out of 100 days with similar conditions, it has hailed. Maybe you'll take a raincoat rather than a singlet or just an umbrella to work/school. I think that my goal this week was to follow the WALT. That's what I have done. I calculating the probability of an event happening. Such as the coin toss (you'll find it in the presentation). An event such as the coin toss was calculated by it's probability.

Staying Warm, Keeping Cool

WALT: Evaluating - I gather, and synthesise to evaluate information across a range of texts.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:  I can clearly outline what the texts have in common and how they differ.

This week in reading we learnt about our bodies and how stay warm and keep cool. One main information I learnt is that blood keeps us cool and warm. Not cool as in you have the style but as in not hot. When we feel hot, our brain cells send signals to the blood to rise to the surface of our skin. It's amazing!

12 x 12 Grid

WALT: Practise our 12 x 12.

Today we did our daily 12 x 12 grid. Everyone had ten minutes to do it. I really proud of myself because I finished at 7 minutes and 7 seconds. That's my record. It may not be as fast as others, but I think its a good time. Can't wait to try and beat tomorrow.

Hmmmm... Yes I Remember!

WALT: Use our knowledge of place values, fractions and decimals to solve word problems

This week in maths we had a refresh of last term. We refreshed our mind with our knowledge of Fractions, Decimals and Place Value. When I first started the presentation I remembered many things. Such as...  finding how many tens there are in a number from the thousands. Take off the last number on the right hand side and you've got it.

Scratch Game Reflection

WALT: Create a game on Scratch.

Last term in extension we created a game on scratch to help us with our knowledge with code. I really did learn a lot and you can see that in this reflection. Ata, Ana and I made this game together. Some parts were fun and other challenging. Here's the link to our game.

Extension trip to Hidden Figures

WALT: Write a review or reflection about school trips right after they have happened.

On the 8th of March the year 7 & 8 Extension group went to see Hidden Figures. We went because one of our teacher's sister, paid for our trip (Mr Vogt is the teacher). That week I learnt that back then in the 60's mathematician were called computers. I also learnt when the first computer had help from Dorothy Vaughan. It was called IBM. The extension group is very thankful for that great day so thank you to Mr Vogt's sister. Here's a brief explanation of the movie. It's about three incredible women who work for NASA. They all helped astronauts go to space. 

Why do we need to drink water?

WALT: Use the' Title-Introduction-Information-Conclusion (TIIC) structure to write an explanation.

Why do we need to drink water?  I ask myself that question all the time. Then I answer that question with… to keep hydrated.  But that isn’t the only answer.  I’m gonna tell you about how drinking water can help you.

Keeping hydrated is one of the number one things of drinking water. When you’re dehydrated you lose fluids.  You could lose those fluids from diarrhea, vomiting, sweating or exercise.  Headaches can bug you and can be painful.  With water, headaches can be prevented and cured with water.

Water is so helpful for everything; from washing cars to have a relaxing time in the pool.  We know that we use water to wash off dirt on the outside of our bodies. But did you know that is can also clean the inside of our bodies. Water cleanses the toxins and digestive systems. When you're choking and drink a glass, the choking stops. That is because it goes through your mouth and to where the choking is happening. It pushes the food down into your stomach.

Don’t take water for granted. There are places in the world where water is hard to get. If you have great supply of water, use it wisely.

This writing was from many weeks ago but here it is now. It took a while for me to get it done but its here now. I learnt that when writing a explanation is that you need TIIC. That means Title, Introduction, Information and Conclusion.

Sentence Types

WALT: Use different types of sentences in our writing.



This week in writing, we are learning to write an explanation. As well as that we learnt to write different sentences. The ones we learnt are... simple sentences, compound sentences and complex sentences. Once we write, I can't wait to write these sort of sentences.

Multiplication Pyramid

WALT: Practise our multiplication.

This week we had a follow up activity. We had to multiply the bottom row then work our way up. I found this very fun. My friends and I had fun trying to work it out the fastest. The top number took a while to found out. 

Solving Fraction Problems

WALT: Order fractions with different denominators.

This week in maths, we learnt about fractions. We learnt how to find out which fraction is larger with different denominators. When I first started I had a bit of trouble finding the right way to solve the questions. Once I had a bit of help, I got the answers straight away. This is our strategy... 

Which fraction is bigger, 6/8 or 3/5. First we multiply the denominators to get the whole number(denominator). Like this:

5 x 8=40

Next we divide the 40 by the denominators by the original denominators. Like this:

40 / 5=8

40 / 8=5

Finally we multiply these numbers by the original numerators. Like this:

8 x 3=24

5 x 6=30

So in the end it should look like this.

30/40 > 24/40.  

Number Knowledge Review

WALT: Use our new number knowledge to solve equations.

This week in maths, we had a warm up activity to test our skill in maths. I found this very helpful because now my mind is refresh and I can do the actual presentation. When I do it, I have to remember that... 

When changing a mixed fraction into a improper fraction, I multiply the denominator by the whole number. Next I add the answer with the left over fractions. Once I've done that, I'm are finish.

Solving Problems with Decimals, Fractions and Percentages

WALT: Solve addition problems with tenths by changing one number into a whole number.



This week in maths we learnt about solving problems with fractions, decimals and percentages. One main thing I learnt was that when the question seems like a addition, it can be turned into a subtraction equation. For example: Jeff has 9.7 metres of rope. Brad has 8.6 metres of rope. What is the difference the between?
Some people may solve it like this: 8.6 + 0.4=9.0   9.0 + 0.7=9.7   0.4 + 0.7=1.1
How I solve it: 9.7 - 8.6=1.1

Polyfest Trip 2017

WALT: Learn more about our cultures and other cultures.

Ever heard of Polyfest? Well if not, it’s a festival where Polynesians perform and compete in a competition. There are a lot of stages for different cultures. I hope to perform next year.

In our group we decided that our name would be skittles (cause we're all different colours). Two boys from Aorere college were our tour guides. They lead us to this stall called, ‘Pasifika Proud’.

Two groups from Pt England joined with a group from Glen Eden. First we went into a stall called ‘Pasifika Proud’. The whole group split into six mini teams. Each team had a word they had to focus on. Those words were… Respect, Tapa relationships, Genealogy, Love and faith and language. There was one more I forgot. I was placed in the genealogy team and we were called ‘the pacific’. I learnt that genealogy is like learning about your ancestors, identity, family and where you're from.

Our next stall was ‘Te Wananga o Aotearoa’.On the way to the next stall, I bumped into Matthew. He’s one of my quad bloggers. I said ‘Hi’ then left. We waited for a bit before we began. A -360° camera was filming as we had dance battle. It was the right side against the left. The first round was Hone against Christian. Everyone was shouting and crowding around the dancers. Next round had the music ‘ju ju on that beat’. Tevita and another girl had to dance. I have to say that was intense round.

Morning tea time came and everyone was eating. I had some shapes and an apple. We thought we were going to go to another stall but we didn’t. Point England was sitting down. We had a talk from our teacher then were handed goody bags. Tempted to open it, I didn’t. Then we were told to go have a roam around. All of the groups walked away but our group ran to the diversity stage. Our leader wanted to her friends son perform. Turns out, his performance was late.

I really enjoyed Polyfest. My goal was to learn more about my culture and things about it. But the Samoan stage had nobody performing. Next year I head into year nine. I hope to make it into Polyfest even if it is the non competitive. The one main thing I did learn was the word Genealogy. That word will stay in my mind forever.

Polyfest was so cool and it was so cool to write about it. My highlight was seeing Matthew (one of my quad bloggers). I also enjoyed spending time with my group Skittles.

Water Worries

WALT:  Support all my answers with evidence from the text.

This week we learnt about water worries. One thing that I learnt is that one of the dirtiest rivers is the Citarum River in West Java, Indonesia. Some problems that polluted the river was sewage, factory waste and litter. My poster is a short but meaningful message, "Water, don't take it for granted".

Thinkboard - Week 7

This is a little warm up activity for this week's presentation in maths. I found this really helpful because now I am ready to start this week off with maths. 

Place Value

WALT: -Demonstrate use of new knowledge about place value.
          -Add and subtract decimals to 3 decimal places.



This week in maths, we learnt about place value and adding and subtracting decimals. One thing that I enjoyed was 'the number conundrum'. I did a practise round before the one that you saw. With that, I didn't go so well. I found it a bit challenging at  first but the second one, I was spot on!

Visual Mihi

WALT: Create a Visual Mihi that shows what is important to you.

This is my Visual Mihi. These four things symbolises the important things in my life. There are much more important things but these are just four. The top let with the yellow background represents School. At school we have a saying for our learning... Learn, Create, Share. My mother is New Zealand European and my father Samoan. The top right hand drawing is the New Zealand flag. I drew a kiwi on the side to show that this is the New Zealand flag not the Australian! Below that flag is the Samoan flag. I drew the coconut tree because there are a lot in Samoa(by the way those are coconuts falling). Last but not least, it is a cross on a mountain. This represents my religion and how I am very proud about it. 

Match Up Activity

WALT: Match up the correct fraction, decimal and percentage.

This was a little activity that was connected to the presentation. How it works is that you match a decimal, percentage and fraction that are the same thing into a group of three. As you can see that is what I did.
